Stone waterproofing is an important topic to consider when constructing or renovating buildings. Indeed, waterproofing a stone from infiltration and moisture-related damage is essential to preserve its aesthetics, durability and long-term functionality. In this article, we will explore the reasons why waterproofing your terrace or stone facade is crucial, the advantages and the most commonly used waterproofing methods and the water-repellent floor products to favor.
Wear and tear due to weather and prolonged exposure
Why make stone waterproof?
Protecting stone from water damage
When stone absorbs liquid, it can seep into its pores, causing cracks, spalling, and even deterioration of its internal structure. Making the stone waterproof prevents water from penetrating inside, protecting its strength and durability.
Prevent the growth of mold and algae
Humid environments are conducive to the growth of mold, fungus and algae. These organisms can not only affect the appearance of stone, but can also make a floor slippery. By waterproofing the stone, we considerably reduce the risk of the development of these undesirable organisms.
Maintain the aesthetics of the stone
The natural beauty of stone is often one of the main reasons for its use in construction. However, when stone is exposed to moisture, it can develop stains, discolorations and a dull appearance. By making it waterproof, we preserve its original appearance, avoiding unwanted alterations.
How to choose a water repellent?
When looking to protect against moisture and infiltration, choosing the right product is crucial. But with all the solutions on the market, it can be difficult to make the right decision. To make your choice easier, we present the different types and formulations of waterproofers, to help you choose the one that best suits your specific needs.
Types of water repellents
Water repellent impregnation
An impregnation product penetrates the interior of porous materials, such as stone, tile, travertine and concrete, forming an invisible barrier. It works by repelling water while allowing the surface to breathe. The impregnating water repellent is ideal for preventing infiltration while maintaining the natural appearance of the supports.
Film-forming water repellent
Unlike impregnating water repellent, a film-forming product forms a protective film on the surface, creating a waterproof barrier. Film-forming water repellent provides additional protection against infiltration, but may alter the original appearance of the surface.
The different formulations of water repellents
Solvent base
Solvent-based waterproofers are formulated with organic chemical compounds. They generally offer deeper penetration and greater durability. Solvent-based waterproofers are particularly suitable for surfaces exposed to extreme conditions, such as industrial areas or marine environments. However, they can emit volatile compounds and often require professional application.
Water based
A water-based treatment is formulated with water as the primary solvent. It is environmentally friendly, low in volatile compounds and easy to apply. Water-based waterproofers are generally suitable for less exposed coatings and are effective against infiltration. They are often used for residential applications or in sensitive environments.
Vegetable base
Biosourced waterproofing agents are formulated from raw materials of plant or renewable origin. They are environmentally friendly and offer an ecological alternative to traditional products. Bio-based waterproofers can be based on vegetable oils, natural resins or other natural compounds.
At Guard Industrie we have developed a range of biosourced products. This range designed and manufactured in France is formulated with plant-based raw materials, coming from natural and renewable resources. Guard Industrie thus offers its customers an alternative to traditional products while maintaining an optimal level of quality, in full compliance with current safety standards.
How to waterproof stone?
Determine the porosity of your stone
It is essential to take porosity into account when choosing and treating natural stone, in order to provide it with appropriate protection and maintain its aesthetic appearance in the long term. There are several simple methods for assessing the porosity of a coating. One of them is to perform a water drop test: place a few drops on the surface and see if they are absorbed quickly or if they form beads. If you need an opinion or advice regarding the porosity of your stone, our experts are at your service!
Choose the water repellent adapted to the porosity of your stone
Due to the great diversity of materials, our protective products have been formulated to adapt to each type of porosity. Discover below a selection of water-repellent waterproofing products for different types of exterior or interior coverings.
Porous stone: natural stone and facing stone
Natural stone (limestone, travertine, etc.) and facing stone are porous in nature, they absorb liquids very quickly. To protect this type of covering, we recommend using ImperGuard Ultra 4 in 1, a powerful waterproofing agent that protects walls or natural stone tiles against water. It also has an oil-repellent function (anti-stain protection). Recommended for floor and wall. ImperGuard Ultra 4 in 1 is available on our site at the price of €63.60 for a 5 liter can.
Moderately porous stone: reconstituted stone
Engineered stone is a material made from a mixture of natural stone particles, cement, resin and other additives. Its porosity may vary depending on its specific composition. In general, engineered stone has reduced porosity compared to natural stone. To protect this moderately porous material, we recommend applying ImperGuard Ultra Végétal, a bio-sourced anti-stain waterproofer for floors and slabs. ImperGuard Ultra Végétal is available on our site at the price of €18.78 for a 1 liter can.
If you want to give your engineered stone a wet effect, it is also possible to use ProtectGuard EM Premium, an anti-stain water repellent with a long-lasting wetting effect. ProtectGuard EM Premium is available on our site at the price of €81.72 for a 2 liter container.
Low porous stone: blue stone, marble
Stones that are not very porous absorb liquids poorly and therefore require a product that penetrates deep into their pores. We recommend applying ImperGuard Ultra MG, an invisible anti-stain waterproofer for very poorly absorbent surfaces such as marble, granite, bluestone or even porcelain stoneware. Applicable to floor and wall. ImperGuard Ultra MG is available on our site at the price of €30.78 per 500 ml bottle.
Clean the stone beforehand
Before any application of a protective product, it is essential to carry out a rigorous cleaning of its covering (removal of grease stains, cement residues, moss, traces of pollution, efflorescence, etc.). This step allows the product to penetrate deeply and guarantee its effectiveness and the final result of the treatment. Do not hesitate to consult our advice for cleaning your stone terrace or facade.

Apply the water repellent correctly for optimal effectiveness
Once the surface has been cleaned, follow our advice for a successful water repellent application. For more information, refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations for use.
- Once cleaning is complete, apply the water repellent product in 1 to 2 coats.
- Apply the product evenly using a sprayer or a flat, wide brush.
- Respect a drying time of two to three days to obtain optimal performance. During this period, the support must be protected.
How to maintain the stone?
Regular maintenance of stone is essential to preserve its beauty and durability. To care for your natural stone, it is recommended to regularly clean the surface with gentle, non-abrasive products such as neutral detergent or black soap. Avoid the use of harsh chemicals such as ammonia or acid-based cleaners, as they may damage the stone. Instead, choose cleaners specially designed for natural stone.
